How to Calculate How Many Pavers You Need

A paver patio or walkway transforms any outdoor space โ€” but you need to know exactly how many stones to order before heading to the supplier. Our pavers calculator handles any paver size with waste factor automatically.

The Paver Formula

Example: A 15ร—12 ft patio (180 sq ft) with 12ร—12" pavers and 10% waste:
180 รท 1.0 ร— 1.10 = 198 pavers.

It depends on paver size. 4ร—8 inch pavers: 4.5 per sq ft. 12ร—12 inch: 1 per sq ft. 16ร—16 inch: 0.56 per sq ft. 24ร—24 inch: 0.25 per sq ft. Use our calculator above for any size.
A proper paver installation requires: (1) a 4-inch compacted gravel base (use crushed #57 stone), (2) a 1-inch screeded coarse sand layer, and finally (3) your pavers. Finish by sweeping polymeric sand into the joints and compacting with a plate compactor.
Sealing is optional but extends the life of pavers, enhances color, and prevents staining and weed growth in joints. Apply a penetrating paver sealer every 3โ€“5 years. Wait at least 6 months after installation before first sealing.
Polymeric sand is a joint sand blended with polymers that harden when wet, locking pavers together and preventing weed growth and insect nesting. It's the best choice for paver joints. Apply after all pavers are set and sweep into joints, then activate with water.
